Finite Energy Solutions of Self-adjoint Elliptic Mixed Boundary Value Problems

چکیده
This paper describes existence, uniqueness and special eigenfunction representations of H1−solutions of second order, self-adjoint, elliptic equations with both interior and boundary source terms. The equations are posed on bounded regions with Dirichlet conditions on part of the boundary and Neumann conditions on the complement. The system is decomposed into separate problems defined on orthogonal subspaces of H(Ω). One problem involves the equation with the interior source term and the Neumann data. The other problem just involves the homogeneous equation with Dirichlet data. Spectral representations of the solution operators for each of these problems are found. The solutions are described using bases that are, respectively, eigenfunctions of the differential operator with mixed null boundary conditions, and certain mixed Steklov eigenfunctions. These series converge strongly in H(Ω). Necessary and sufficient conditions for the Dirichlet part of the boundary data to have a finite energy extension are described. The solutions for a problem that models a cylindrical capacitor is found explicitly.

On Approximate Stationary Radial Solutions for a Class of Boundary Value Problems Arising in Epitaxial Growth Theory
In this paper, we consider a non-self-adjoint, singular, nonlinear fourth order boundary value problem which arises in the theory of epitaxial growth. It is possible to reduce the fourth order equation to a singular boundary value problem of second order given by w''-1/r w'=w^2/(2r^2 )+1/2 λ r^2. The problem depends on the parameter λ and admits multiple solutions. Therefore, it is difficult to...
متن کاملEnforcing the Discrete Maximum Principle for Linear Finite Element Solutions of Elliptic Problems LAUR-07-3949
The maximum principle is basic qualitative property of the solution of elliptic boundary value problems. The preservation of the qualitative characteristics, such as maximum principle, in discrete model is one of the key requirements. It is well known that standard linear finite element solution does not satisfy maximum principle on general triangular meshes in 2D. In this paper we consider how...

متن کاملUniformly convergent non-standard finite difference methods for self-adjoint singular perturbation problems
We design non-standard finite difference schemes for self-adjoint singularly perturbed two-point boundary value problems. Essential physical properties (e.g., dissipativity) of the solutions of such problems are captured in the schemes by an appropriate renormalization of the denominator of the discrete derivative. The schemes are analyzed for -uniform convergence. Several numerical examples ar...
متن کاملExistence and multiplicity of positive solutions for a class of semilinear elliptic system with nonlinear boundary conditions
This study concerns the existence and multiplicity of positive weak solutions for a class of semilinear elliptic systems with nonlinear boundary conditions. Our results is depending on the local minimization method on the Nehari manifold and some variational techniques. Also, by using Mountain Pass Lemma, we establish the existence of at least one solution with positive energy.
